Mercier is the institution — a fourth-generation apple orchard whose massive market store is basically a rainy-day theme park. Hot fried pies, apple cider donuts straight from the fryer, a deli for lunch, and a hard cider and wine tasting bar pouring most afternoons. Open daily, it's five minutes north of downtown and you will not leave empty-handed.

The train runs rain or shine, and honestly the misty-mountain view along the Toccoa River might be better in the rain. Choose the 2-hour Express (26 miles round trip) or the 4-hour version with a 2-hour layover to explore McCaysville/Copperhill — the twin towns straddling the GA/TN line. Ten minutes south in Cherry Log sits the country's largest permanent collection of Bigfoot “evidence” — 4,000 square feet of casts, sighting maps, life-sized exhibits, and the world's only Bigfoot research vehicle. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, it's genuinely entertaining and weirdly well-curated, and it kills a solid 60–90 minutes. Open daily, and cheap enough that nobody complains.

Downtown Blue Ridge is compact enough to shop awning-to-awning in the rain — East Main and West Main are stacked with antique stores, art galleries, outfitters, fudge and toy shops, and tasting rooms. The multi-dealer antique spots can swallow an hour each. Mix in coffee at one of the cafes and lunch on Main Street and you've got an entire afternoon without ever sprinting more than a block in the wet.

Tucked in the Aska Adventure Area eight miles from town, the Lilly Pad's gem mining flume is covered (and heated in winter), making it a legit rainy-day option for kids who need to burn energy.
